DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception & Artist Talk: Friday\, January 29\, 6-7:30 p.m. \nUsing rocks\, bricks\, and automobile tire shreds as mark-making tools\, Athena LaTocha creates large-scale works on paper that explore the tenuous relationship between natural landscapes and landscapes marked by human intervention. LaTocha prefers to work on the floor\, reflecting the relationship between human and landscape\, while choosing unusual drawing tools for their physicality and ability to convey gestural intensity. \n	About the Artist\nAthena LaTocha received her MFA from Stony Brook University\, Stony Brook\, NY\, and her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago\, IL.

DESCRIPTION:The 2021 W&J Symposium on Democracy will focus on “Democracy in Times of Crisis: When Freedom and Security Collide.” Featuring keynote speakers Kathleen Belew\, Pat Benic\, Jocelyn Benson\, Nathan Law\, and Adrian Shahbaz\, we will examine issues of tension between freedom and security around the world\, taking a look at the violent storming of the U.S. Captiol\, the growing toll of the global pandemic\, and a growing decline in international democracy as many governments impose new limits on individual freedoms and political dissent. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, the Symposium will take place entirely remotely.
