The PRSO\, “the premier American ragtime ensemble” as acclaimed by the Washington Post\, takes you back to the early 1900s as they accompany three classic films from the silent era as they were meant to be seen – with live orchestral accompaniment and sound effects. Between the films\, hear Peacherine play the rollicking rhythms of the early 20th century\, featuring favorites by Scott Joplin\, Irving Berlin\, and more! Fun for the whole family! \nwww.peacherineragtime.com

SUMMARY:“Nature’s Latest Cosmic Mystery: Fast Radio Bursts” lecture by Duncan Lorimer
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed astrophysicist Duncan Lorimer will speak on “Nature’s Latest Cosmic Mystery: Fast Radio Bursts” taking us on a whirlwind tour of radio astronomy. He will review research by his own group and by astrophysics groups worldwide. \nPulsars are rapidly spinning\, massive stars at the most interesting phase of their lives. Each one sends out a characteristic signal\, similar to a radio fingerprint\, identifying it in the flurry of radio tweets permeating the cosmos. Lorimer and his group are regular users of the Green Bank Telescope in the West Virginia\, the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico\, and telescopes in Europe and Australia as part of a lengthy effort to determine the dynamics of these mysterious stars. \nLorimer will put the puzzle of fast radio bursts (FRB) in context by discussing how modern astrophysics community advances through international observing “campaigns.” They steer space telescopes like Hubble\, Swift\, and Spitzer towards their targets and use supercomputers to calculate orbits and decipher the rapid flashes emanating from these objects. In this way astronomers scored a number of hits in recent decades solving the problem of gamma ray bursts in the early 2000s and verifying Einstein’s prediction on the existence of gravitational waves in 2016. Lorimer’s talk will discuss how the FRB problem may be solved\, and how this will impact our understanding of the powerful forces within them such as gravity\, nuclear forces\, and electrodynamics. \nDuncan Lorimer got his Ph.D. on Pulsar Astronomy from the University of Manchester in the UK working under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Lyne\, Dick Manchester and Matthew Bailes. Since then he has held positions at the University of Manchester\, the Max-Planck-Institute for Radio Astronomy at Cornell University\, and West Virginia University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society since 1994. While at West Virginia University\, he has received a Cottrell Scholar Award (2008-present) from the Research Corporation for Scientific Advancement and has received both his College and University’s recognition for excellence in teaching. He is currently Associate Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Among his notable research achievements are his contributions to our understanding of the population of pulsars and the discovery of Fast Radio Bursts.

SUMMARY:Copla & Tango: An explosive cocktail of Spanish Songs & Argentine Tango
DESCRIPTION:“Copla & Tango” is a performance that highlights the most distinctive musical genres in Spain and Argentina between 1930-60. Even that each country cultivated their own musical genres\, they share some themes in their lyrics like love gone wrong\, fighting between men\, passion\, etc. \nAt the beginning of the 20th century waves of immigrants from different parts of Europe arrived to Buenos Aires port. They brought their own customs and music. Later\, at the tenement houses (conventillos)\, they share their music. In this way the Spanish copla  became one of the musical influence in early tangos in Argentina. \nPerformers\nADA LIS JIMENA\, voice \nOriginally from Mendoza\, Argentina. Ada Lis Jimena earned her B.M degree in Music Education from Music School\, National University of Cuyo\, Mendoza\, Argentina and her master degree in Evaluation in Education from Playa Ancha University\, Chile.  \nMeanwhile she lived in Argentina\, Ada Lis developed his career in Music Pedagogy as Music and Drama Teacher through K-12 grade. She also served as Altus leader as well as Chairperson and Associate Professor in Music Pedagogy and Voice at several Music Conservatories and the School of Music in Mendoza.  \nSince moving to USA in 2002\, Ada Lis works as writer\, director\, performer and producer of her own concerts and educational programs based in the music of Argentina as well as other repertoire including Latin-American\, Spanish\, Catalonian and French. SUMMARY:Dr. Tami Blumenfield - “Environment and Ecology in Southwest China: Wetlands\, Mountains and National Parks in the ‘Ecological Civilization’ Era.”
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, March 5th\, Dr. Tami Blumenfield will give a public talk on “Environment and Ecology in Southwest China: Wetlands\, Mountains and National Parks in the ‘Ecological Civilization’ Era.” Dr. Blumenfield’s presentation will be in Yost at 7:00 PM. \nDr. Blumenfield’s presentation is free\, and open to the public. No tickets are required. \nThe words “China’s environment” often conjure up images of polluted skies and ecological wastelands. These problems are very real\, but China is a big country\, and its environmental situation goes well beyond air pollution. This talk will discuss a different side of China’s ecology\, looking at wetlands and alpine zones in the mountainous Yunnan Province and at efforts to develop national parks in other parts of rural China. These examples will also provide the opportunity to question and explore the Chinese government’s efforts to develop and promote “ecological civilization.” Whether they represent an improved ecological situation or not is an open question.
