Steel Betty lives at the crossroads of what makes Austin\, Texas the engine driving traditional music in America. Flavors of bluegrass\, folk\, blues\, Tex-Mex\, Old Time music\, and classic country are a reflection of today’s American music scene. Steel Betty\, the hip\, virtuosic trio\, embraces Austin’s eclectic culture and brings this lively music out of Texas for the rest of the country to experience. \nDavid McD (guitar\, vocals)\, Maddy Froncek (banjo\, upright bass\, vocals)\, and Micah Motenko (mandolin\, piano\, vocals) are multi-instrumentalists capturing the sounds and harmonies of Austin like no other ensemble. Music of Bill Monroe\, the Stanley Brothers\, Spirituals\, the Conjunto tradition\, and more highlight Steel Betty’s performances. SUMMARY:Jose Galvez ~ Keynote Lecture
DESCRIPTION:When José was 10\, he carried his shoeshine box into the building of the Arizona Daily Star. After that night\, he was a permanent fixture in the newsroom. He bought a camera at a pawn shop in high school and inspired by his mentors at the paper\, went on to major in journalism at the University of Arizona. Upon graduation he became a staff photographer at the Star. No matter what his assignments were early on\, José always focused his lens on the barrios of Tucson – his home – and the people who lived\, worked\, and loved there. He had his first professional exhibition when he was just 22 years old. At about the same time\, José’s participation in the Chicano Movement led him to see his work as more than a passion: he had a responsibility to capture the history of his people. \nHis compelling work\, done with respect\, pride and no pretense\, captures the beauty of daily life. His photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries here and abroad\, including the Smithsonian. José’s keynote address will focus on his journey\, work\, and the impact of Latino communities across the United States.  \nSee more of his work at https://www.josegalvez.com/.

DESCRIPTION:The Olin Art Gallery and the Art Department invite the entire W&J community to attend the opening reception and artist talk for the exhibition\, Already Always by Brooks Dierdorff on Friday\, Sept. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. The artist will begin his talk at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the Olin Art Gallery. The exhibition continues through October 11\, 2019 and is open Monday-Friday\, 12-5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday\, 1-4 p.m.Brooks Dierdorff is an artist working in photography\, video\, sculpture and installation. He has exhibited his work at galleries both nationally and internationally. Dierdorff received his BA from the University of California\, San Diego in 2007 and his MFA from the University of Oregon in 2012. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of Photography at the University of Central Florida in Orlando\, Florida.
