Schmidt’s work explores pattern as metaphor\, exploring cultural\, social\, and personal identities\, whereas McGlumphy transforms the authentic material culture of rural America into critiques of modern American values\, beliefs\, and social structures. Schmidt teaches courses in painting\, design\, and drawing\, and McGlumphy conducts classes in sculpture and design. This exhibition is the second in a series of four that highlight the faculty and students in the Department of Art and Art History at W&J College. Preceded by an exhibition by Visiting Assistant Professor\, Carolina Alamilla\, Schmidt and McGlumphy will be followed by two W&J Senior Shows\, featuring work of graduating students from the class of 2022. \n\n\n\nPatrick Schmidt lives in Pittsburgh\, PA and received both his BFA and MFA from Central Michigan University\, Mount Pleasant\, MI. Doug McGlumphy lives in Stone Creek\, OH and received his BA from Washington & Jefferson College\, Washington\, PA and his MFA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania\, Indiana\, PA. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is co-sponsored in coordination with the Faculty Development Committee.

SUMMARY:Poetry Reading - James Davis May and Chelsea Rathburn
DESCRIPTION:Join the English Department for a poetry reading that will feature James Davis May and Chelsea Rathburn on March 10th\, 6:30-7:30 p.m.\, in the Media Room. \nJames Davis May is the author of Unquiet Things\, named runner-up for the Georgia Author of the Year Award in poetry. His poems have appeared in Five Points\, The Missouri Review\, New England Review\, The Southern Review\, and elsewhere. He has received scholarships and fellowships from The Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, Inprint\, and the Krakow Poetry Seminar. He is Writer-in-Residence at Mercer University and a 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in Poetry. \nChelsea Rathburn is the author of three full-length poetry collections\, most recently Still Life with Mother and Knife\, a New York Times “New & Noteworthy” book. Her poems have appeared in the nation’s most esteemed journals\, including Poetry\, The Atlantic Monthly\, The Southern Review\, and Ploughshares\, among others. In 2009\, she received a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts\, and in 2019 she was appointed poet laureate of Georgia.

Tickets start at just $17 and can be purchased online at washsym.org\, by calling 1-888-71-TICKETS\, or at the following locations: Citizens Library\, the Peters Township Public Library\, and the WSO Office on East Wheeling Street in Washington (WSO Office by appointment only\, call 724-223-9796 and leave a message for appointment). DESCRIPTION:Working through the weight of identity\, Carolina Alamilla uses colors and a sense of playfulness to engage with the viewer. Alamilla steps away from the real and creates objects that lose their functionality but are a metaphor for hope\, memory\, and the environment. Using hand building and mold-making ceramic skills\, Alamilla produces multiples that lead to altered scenes of everyday life. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist \n\n\n\nOriginally from South Florida\, Carolina Alamilla is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at W&J. She received her BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Chapel Hill\, NC\, and her MFA from Texas Tech University\, Lubbock\, TX.
