SUMMARY:Micaela de Vivero Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Using soft\, malleable\, porous materials\, Micaela de Vivero creates large-scale sculptures and installations that consider political and social issues connected to feminist and post-colonial concerns. As a woman of color and first-generation immigrant to the United States of America\, Vivero responds to these associations as well as the misunderstandings that unbalanced relationships between hegemonic and colonized cultures generate. Her contribution to the field is to create strong statements with apparent delicate materials to destabilize power relations. \n	About the Artist\nMicaela de Vivero lives in Newark\, OH. Vivero received a BA in studio arts from the University of San Francisco Quito\, Quito\, Ecuador\, and a MFA in sculpture from Alfred University\, Alfred\, NY.

SUMMARY:Homecoming & Reunion Weekend\, Oct. 8 & 9
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for Homecoming & Reunion Weekend\, Oct. 8 & 9. We can’t wait to celebrate alongside the W&J family after more than a year apart. Mark your calendars to join us for a weekend full of Red & Black spirit! \nAn important update about your return to campus: Prior to the fall semester\, a mandatory vaccination requirement for students\, faculty\, and staff was instated based on our commitment to protect our community members and their families\, including those who are unable to be vaccinated. To further our commitment to keeping the campus community safe\, college leadership\, with guidance from the W&J Clinical Advisory Panel\, made the decision to require Homecoming & Reunion attendees to be fully vaccinated prior to attending Homecoming & Reunion Weekend festivities. In keeping with the requirement for faculty\, staff\, and students\, all attendees will be asked to provide proof of vaccination during online registration or upon arriving on campus. Additionally\, in accordance with the College’s masking policy announced August 9\, all campus guests regardless of vaccination status are required to wear a mask in any indoor campus setting\, except for when actively eating and drinking. For more information on how to stay safe at W&J\, please visit our FAQ page.  \n

SUMMARY:W&J Arts Series: Nandanik Dance Troupe - "Card Country"
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore\, Nandanik Dance Troupe presents “Card Country\,” one of his most entertaining dance dramas based on the play “Tasher Desh.” \n\n\n\nA prince and his friend find themselves on a strange island after they are shipwrecked. The inhabitants of this land\, various playing cards\, have strange manners: they follow a set of rules\, are disciplined in a strict system\, and are extremely cautious about maintaining their culture. The lack of freedom of expression drives the prince to bring about changes in the lives of the enslaved cards. Will he succeed? \n\n\n\nWilliam Radice\, who translated “Tasher Desh” from Bengali to English\, says “Card Country upbraids those who live a blinkered existence and urges the world to openly nurture a joyous\, youthful and imaginative life.

SUMMARY:"Everybody" by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
DESCRIPTION:By Branden Jacobs-Jenkins \n\n\n\n\n\nDEATH: “God needs a… report from you. Just like some general sense of your time here and how you spent it\, how you lived your life so wrong and why – you know\, like a presentation…. I think it’s for internal purposes….” \n\n\n\nEverybody\, a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for drama\, is a modern riff on the fifteenth-century morality play Everyman. “Everybody” must go on an allegorical journey for which they seek a companion – from personifications of “Kinship\,” “Friendship\,” “Strength\,” “Beauty” – in the hope that one of them will accompany “Everybody” on their appointment with Death. In the process\, they explore the meaning of living. \n\n\n\nGuest DirectorCarley E. Lyon (née Adams) is a director\, actor\, and professional nonprofit writer based in Pittsburgh\, PA. She graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts and a Professional Writing Concentration. \n\n\n\nCarley made her directing debut in 2015 at W&J with the one-act comedy\, “Sometimes You Just Gotta Get in There\,” written by fellow alumnus Drew Aloe. It was the first entirely student-run production at W&J in a decade. In 2018\, Carley was recruited for Little Lake Theatre Company’s Emerging Director Program in Canonsburg\, PA\, where she served as dramaturge and assistant director for Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia (dir. Jena Oberg) and assistant director for James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter (dir. Art DeConciliis). In 2019\, she made her Pittsburgh directing debut at the Pittsburgh New Works Festival with the one-act black comedy\, “Statin Eye-Land Fairy\,” by Richard Manley. Most recently\, she directed Mrs. Mannerly by Jeffrey Hatcher as part of Little Lake Theatre’s 2021 Main Stage Season. \n\n\n\nCarley is excited to bring Everybody to life at Olin Fine Arts Center\, the very place where her creative identity was born. Special thanks to the faculty of the Communication Arts Department – both present and retired – for encouraging her to aim ever higher!
