DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore\, Nandanik Dance Troupe presents “Card Country\,” one of his most entertaining dance dramas based on the play “Tasher Desh.” \n\n\n\nA prince and his friend find themselves on a strange island after they are shipwrecked. The inhabitants of this land\, various playing cards\, have strange manners: they follow a set of rules\, are disciplined in a strict system\, and are extremely cautious about maintaining their culture. The lack of freedom of expression drives the prince to bring about changes in the lives of the enslaved cards. Will he succeed? \n\n\n\nWilliam Radice\, who translated “Tasher Desh” from Bengali to English\, says “Card Country upbraids those who live a blinkered existence and urges the world to openly nurture a joyous\, youthful and imaginative life.

The W&J Arts Series will receive a portion of the proceeds. \nWith all three categories offered – Animated\, Live Action\, and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)! The Academy Awards take place Sunday\, April 25th. \nThe Olin Fine Arts Center cannot take payment through the box office; patrons must pay separately for access. DESCRIPTION:All American program selections include The Alcotts by Ives\, Piano Blues by Copland\, Sonata by Barber\, and pieces by Stefan Wolpe and Jon Fisher. \nMark Valenti received his Master of Music from Northwestern University\, Bachelor of Music from the Philadelphia Musical Academy\, and has studied with such notable teachers as Benjamin Whitten\, Zoltan Kocsis\, and Mary Sauer. In addition to giving solo recitals in cities throughout the U.S.\, Mr. Valenti has performed in France\, Belgium\, Hungary\, and Luxembourg as well as for former First Lady Barbara Bush in Washington\, D.C. \nMark Valenti has performed recitals live on WFMT classical radio. He has also done extensive work in the Jazz field including performances with Gregory Hines\, Frank Foster\, and Al Grey and has appeared on television with Joe Sudler’s Swing Machine and singer/actor Christopher Durham. \nFormerly a Professor of Music at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, Xavier University in Chicago\, and the Loire Valley Music Institute in France\, Mr. Valenti currently teaches at his studio in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and is available for lessons for all levels and all styles.
