A Progressive Town
Progressive from the start, the founding of Washington, PA included setting aside outdoor recreation space for the public, an unusual move in 1781. Progressive early leaders include the founder of the Abolition Society, Dr. Francis J. LeMoyne, whose home was part of the Underground Railroad, and David Bradford, who led the Whiskey Rebellion protesting the 1791 tax on whiskey. Both of their homes are now National Historic Landmarks. Today, Washington, PA still maintains plenty of green space for outdoor recreation and supports entrepreneurship with a small business incubator space. Built-in 1788, this home was the original residence of David Bradford, a successful lawyer, businessman, and Deputy Attorney General of Washington County. Bradford was involved in the Whiskey Rebellion, which started right here in the Washington area.

Pennsylvania's first National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad and museum features period artifacts. This home and museum are dedicated to Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne, a successful doctor, reformer, and builder of the first crematory in the western hemisphere. The Lemoyne House also serves as the headquarters for the Washington County Historical Society.
The rockshelter features the earliest signs of human habitation dating back 16,000 years. Visitors can also explore a rural 19th century village and 16th century prehistoric Indian village.
