Washington, PA (April 12, 2016) — Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow Amber Tamblyn, an award-winning actress, writer, and filmmaker, will be in residence at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) from April 25 to 27.

Tamblyn will present “Not-Your-Typical-Poetry-Reading: Poems and Musings on the Creative Life” on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 100 of the Dieter-Porter Life Sciences Building on the W&J campus. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a book signing will follow the event.

Tamblyn has been captivating audiences since a young age, making her acting debut on General Hospital at the age of 11. She is best known for her roles in HOUSE, 127 Hours, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and as the title character in CBS’ Joan of Arcadia. Tamblyn’s work in television and film has garnered her numerous awards and recognitions—she has been nominated for an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit Award and won the Hollywood Reporter Young Star Award for Best Actress in a Daytime Series two years in a row, as well as the Locarno Film Festival award for Best Actress for her work in the film Stephanie Daley.

A versatile talent, Tamblyn is also a respected author, poet, and filmmaker. At just 12 years old, her first poem was published in the San Francisco Chronicle. In the years following, Amber self-published two early chapbooks of poetry titled Of the Dawn and Plenty of Ships and later earned critical acclaim with her debut book of poems, Free Stallion, written over the course of a decade, as well as 2009’s Bang Ditto. Her most recent work, Dark Sparkler, is a collection of persona poems, and complementary paintings by Marilyn Manson, exploring the lives and premature deaths of child star actresses. In 2014 Tamblyn also made her directorial debut for “Paint it Black,” based on Janet Finch’s novel of the same name.

Currently, Tamblyn writes for The Poetry Foundation, serves as the executive producer of “The Drums Inside Your Chest,” an annual poetry concert showcasing outstanding contemporary poets, and is a poetry reviewer for Bust Magazine. She is also the co-founder of the nonprofit Write Now Poetry Society, which works to build audiences for poetry through unique performances and events.

The Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program, which is administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, D.C., brings prominent artists, diplomats, journalists, business leaders, and other professionals to campuses across the United States for a week-long residential program of classes, seminars, workshops, lectures, and informal discussions.
