WASHINGTON, PA (Jan. 6, 2016) - For the second year in a row, Campus Compact is honoring a W&J student with the Newman Civic Fellows Award.
Emily Huber, a junior child development and education major, was selected as a 2016 Newman Civic Fellow.
“This means so much to me,” Huber said. “I was so proud and pleased to see all of my hard work be acknowledged and appreciated. I volunteer for the joy of others. Seeing the look on others faces when you help them out or work with them is priceless.”
Huber serves as a W&J Community Outreach Team Leader and W&J volunteer coordinator at the LeMoyne Community Center with the Homework & More Program. The after school program serves more than 100 at-risk youth and provides them with mentoring, homework support and additional enrichment programming. She mainly works with students in kindergarten through eleventh grade, and said she forms a strong bond with all of them.
“The best part is when a student is struggling and when you actually sit down and help them and they come in with an A on their test. You get so proud of them," she said. "I enjoy all the memories I receive from it. These students mean so much to me and it's awesome to make such an impact on their lives, but they are making a huge impact on my life!”
The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. The fellowship provides training and resources that nurture students’ assets and passions to help them develop strategies to achieve social change. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides learning opportunities focused on the skills fellows need in order to serve as effective agents of change in addressing public problems and building equitable communities.
Newman Civic Fellows are nominated for their demonstrated commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. In 2015, Brianna Frederick ’16 was a recipient of the award.
