WASHINGTON, PA (Sept. 11, 2017)—Just days into their first semester of college, the Class of 2021 is already showcasing the qualities of Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) Presidents.
Led by Sydney Kightlinger ’21 and Selena Easley ’21, members of the class have organized a supply collection drive to provide relief for the more than 30,000 people living in emergency shelters as a result of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey.
The class is accepting donations of diapers for infants and toddlers, adult diapers, wipes, and feminine hygiene products, and the collection period will last through Thursday, Sept. 14. The items collected will go to the Texas Diaper Bank, which will distribute donations to disaster relief efforts along the Texas coast.
Though organizing a supply drive in response to a natural disaster to ensure that the correct items are being donated and provided to an agency that can use them can be tricky, Kightlinger and Easley were able to connect with the Texas Diaper Bank and organize an effective drive on their own.
“Community service is super important to me. I read [a quote by Mahatma Gandhi] that said you have ‘to be the change you want to see in world,’ so I just ran with that throughout high school and now here at W&J. I just enjoy being of assistance to my friends, my community, and my world,” Kightlinger said.
Donation boxes are located near the resident assistant’s room on all freshmen residence hall floors.
