Distinguished Alumnus to Receive 2016 Maurice C. Waltersdorf Award

WASHINGTON, PA (April 4, 2016) – Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) is pleased to announce the 2016 Maurice Cleveland Waltersdorf Award recipient, alumnus and leader in the field of human resources John T. Lucas ’82.

The Maurice Cleveland Waltersdorf Awards Luncheon will be held April 7, 2016 at noon at the Rivers Club at One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Lucas is senior vice president of global human resources and chief human resources officer for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, one of the world’s largest tire companies employing 66,000 people with operations in 49 facilities in 22 countries around the world. As such, he is responsible for the development and implementation of the global human capital strategy for the company, including the cultural evolution of this 117-year-old global iconic brand. He is based at Goodyear’s global headquarters in Akron, Ohio.

Lucas has more than 30 years of human resources leadership experience and achievement in the manufacturing, consumer products and technology industries.

Prior to joining Goodyear in 2015, Lucas was the senior vice president of human resources and communications for Lockheed Martin Corporation, a Fortune 50 company and the world’s largest aerospace and defense company. In this position, he led a global team of over 3,200 human resources, communications and security professionals in support of this $48.2B business with 150,000 employees. During Lucas’ tenure, Lockheed Martin was honored with the prestigious Catalyst award in 2014 for innovative organizational approaches that address the recruitment, development, and advancement of women. This marked the first-ever Catalyst win for an aerospace and defense company.

Before joining Lockheed, Lucas held the position of general manager, human resources for Microsoft’s Mobile and Embedded Device Business Division, which was the fastest growing business segment at an annual growth of nearly 50% per year. From there, he went on to lead human resources for Microsoft’s $21.5B Business Division, home to the Microsoft Office suite products, and the largest and most profitable of the company’s five externally reported operating segments.

During his career, Lucas has held positions of increasing responsibility in executive human resources with the Eastman Kodak Company, ConAgra Foods and Merck & Company.

A native of Pittsburgh, Lucas is a graduate of Washington & Jefferson College, where he received a bachelor’s degree in economics. He earned his master’s degree in labor and industrial relations from St. Francis University. Lucas is a member of the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) Academy, Human Resources Policy Association and HR 50. He is also a graduate of Leadership Omaha (1995-1996). In 2014, ExecRank listed Lucas #19 on their list of 200 “Top Human Resources Executives.” Under his leadership, Lucas’ HR teams have regularly been recognized by Fortune magazine as among the “Most Admired for HR.”

John and his wife, Eileen, have two daughters and maintain a residence on Mt. Washington.
