WASHINGTON, PA (May 16, 2018)—The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program awarded Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) senior Jordan Hosfelt ’18 an honorable mention for his application to the program.

The NSF program recruits high-potential, early-career scientists and engineers and supports their graduate research training in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Jordan was one of only 1,459 individuals in the nation selected for an honorable mention out of a pool of more than 12,000 candidates.

In the past, W&J alumni have won this prestigious award during their first or second year of graduate school, but Jordan is only the second W&J student in the past ten years to have earned an honorable mention rating as an undergraduate.

“W&J has given me opportunities to excel both inside and outside of the classroom, and has given me opportunities for not only academic but holistic growth,” said Jordan, a chemistry major and Spanish minor. “The quality education I received and my grades were complimented by an NSF undergraduate research experience (REU), experiential cultural learning through Magellan and study abroad, and volunteering at the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) in Washington and with local youth through our chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (SAACS).

“I think that those extra opportunities and my close relationships with my professors allowed my application to stand out among an impressive group of students,” he added.

Jordan plans to spend the summer traveling before moving to New York City to enroll in a doctoral program in chemistry at New York University.
