WASHINGTON, PA (Oct. 5, 2015) — Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) student Bailey Murdick ’16 received the Franklin Magellan award, which allowed her to spend her summer in New York City interning at Tiffany & Co.

Mudrick, from West Palm Beach, Fla., is a communication arts major with a film studies emphasis, a minor in environmental studies, and a concentration in conflict & resolution studies. She interned in the internal communications department of the corporate office of Tiffany & Co.

She focused on maintaining a weekly newsletter that shared articles and news throughout to company to more than ten-thousand employees globally. She also developed slides for televisions located throughout the corporate offices that showed employees the latest Tiffany & Co. products.

Mudrick gained experience to use in the workforce, but living in a city gave her real world experience, too.

“A personal challenge that I faced was navigating the city,” said Mudrick. “There were countless times I found myself on the wrong subway or heading in the opposite direction, but after using the subway daily I was able to somewhat understand the system.”

As a part of her Franklin Magellan award, Mudrick was also required to complete an independent project. She chose to interview W&J alumni John Pendleton ’81, who is a lawyer, and Taj Lewis ’96, a production manager for CBS sports network, about their experiences at W&J.

“During some parts of the interview it felt as though I was stepping back in time and picturing what college was like for these men during their undergraduate years,” said Mudrick.  “It made me appreciate my current professors, teammates and friends that I have made during my four years at W&J.”

Mudrick plans to return to New York City and work in the public relations field after graduation.

“I would like to thank Karen Oosterhous, Director of Communications at W&J, and Alumni Relations Office,” said Mudrick. “My Magellan has taught me that I can live in any situation, but working for a company that truly cares for its employees is essential in any work environment.”
