WASHINGTON, PA (Jan. 23, 2017) - Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) student Xueyi (Ariel) Lei ’18 presented her work on the national stage in January, when a group of W&J students and professors attended the annual joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
Xueyi's presentation was titled, “Constructing a matroid from a finite Group,” and was based on independent research she conducted with Dr. Ryan Higginbottom, W&J mathematics professor, during the summer and fall of 2016.
The conference, held this year in Atlanta, Ga., is one of the largest mathematics conferences in the United States and attracted more than 6,000 attendees.
Accompanied by Drs. Higginbottom, Roman Wong, and Michael Woltermann of the W&J Department of Mathematics, W&J students Marissa Sudar '18, Jacob Paradise '18, Madison Babicka '18, and Kashmir Sainiak '18 also attended the conference.
