WASHINGTON, PA (Nov. 26, 2013)—A new internship opportunity, in conjunction with Jefferson Regional Hospital in Pittsburgh and designed to begin training student health coaches in the Intersession of 2014, is now available to all Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) students.

As part of the pilot program, student health coaches, after training at Jefferson Regional Hospital, would counsel patients recently released from the hospital in an effort to assist the patients with their convalescence and to do whatever can be done to curb preventable readmissions, said Stan Myers, Ph.D., pre-health committee consultant at W&J.

Myers said training would take place at Jefferson Regional Hospital four days a week from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for three weeks in January. Students could still be a part of this program even if they have used their two Intersession experiences. The internship itself would be performed in the spring of 2014, and at the end of that term the student would receive credit for one course with the successful completion of all requirements.

“During the spring there would be more training, some potentially on-line, more shadowing, and the opportunity to contact and work with your own patient,” Myers added.

Registration is open to all students, but preference will be given to sophomores and juniors.  The program is open to students in any major, and you do not need to be in pre-health to be considered.

Those interested should contact Dr. Myers at smyers@washjeff.edu. Please provide by Dec. 3 contact information, why you are interested, your course schedule for intersession and spring of 2014 and a very brief personal statement.
