WASHINGTON, PA (Oct. 21, 2016) – Five new officers of the Student Government Association (SGA) at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) are in place and have begun their roles.
Throughout the 2016-17 academic year, the SGA, under the leadership of its executive board, will lead the W&J student body, including overseeing campus clubs and organizations.
Student Government meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in Yost Auditorium of the Howard J. Burnett Center. Meetings are open to the W&J student population.
SGA Executive Board members are:
Nate Ecker ‘17
- Bio: Ecker is an economics major who plans to become a corporate lawyer and run for Congress. He is President of W&J’s Inter-Fraternity Council; a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity; co-captain of the Men’s Volleyball Team; Matthew Brown Volunteer Fellowship; Vice President of the Pre-Legal Society; Student Ambassador/Fellow; Mock Trial Team.
- Position: Student Government President; involved for four years, previously served as Student Government Secretary and as a Class representative.
- Why SGA?: “The Student Government Association is an avenue for all students to influence their experience at W&J as well as that of other students. From funding all organizations on campus to planning the spring concert and helping to facilitate campus-wide changes, SGA is a way to make W&J better for future generations of students, and that is why I am proud to be involved as Student Government, President.”
Bailey Emory ‘18
- Bio: Emory is an environmental studies major and a philosophy minor who plans to become an environmental lawyer. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, manages public relation for W&J’s Pan-Helenic Counsel, and is a former treasurer of Alpha Lambda Delta.
- Position: Vice President of Student Government; involved for three years as a class representative
- Why SGA?: “I chose SGA because I love being involved.”
Lila Thompson ‘18
- Bio: Thompson is a French and international business double major, who plans to pursue a career in business. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
- Position: Treasurer of Student Government; involved for three years as class representative
- Why SGA?: “I joined SGA to get involved on campus.”
Danielle Shellgren ‘18
- Bio: Shellgren is a communication arts major with an emphasis in public relations, and is minoring in both business administration and gender & women’s studies. She serves as Philanthropy Chair of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Development Intern at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, Communications Chair of the Washington Fellows Honors Program, Greek Life Community Assistant, Music Director at WNJR Radio, and is a Community Outreach Team Leader. She plans to pursue a career in Public Relations or Marketing at a music-related company or record label.
- Position: Student Government Secretary; involved for three years
- Why SGA?: “I love being involved in a variety of activities, and SGA is a great way to learn about all of the opportunities W&J has to offer. There is no other organization that allows students to hear about all of the interesting things that W&J student clubs are doing in the capacity that SGA does. SGA really allows the student body to have a voice on campus.”
Kenny Clark ‘18
- Bio: Clark is a biochemistry major with a minor in religious studies. He is a Charles West Scholar, Residential Assistant, President of W&J’s Black Student Union, President of W&Jaybirds A Capella Choir, a member of the Student Christian Association Leadership Committee, the Presidential Search Committee, and the Camerata Singers. Clark plans to become an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine.
- Positon: Parliamentarian; involved for three years
- Why SGA?: “Student Government is a place where students can make a difference on the campus. It is also a great way to leave a lasting legacy of positive change. But most of the all, all of the students, faculty, and staff that I come in contact with through Student Government is what makes it the most enjoyable for me.”
