WASHINGTON, PA (March 28, 2018)—George A. Lopez, Ph.D., one of the world’s ranking experts on economic sanctions and peacebuilding, will speak at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) on Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in the Allen Ballroom of the Rossin Campus Center.
Lopez’s lecture, “Negotiations, Mediation and Peacebuilding in Crisis: Dealing with North Korea,” is part of the Walter K. Levy Lecture series hosted by the Department of Conflict and Resolution Studies and is a feature of W&J’s International Week. The event is free and open to the public.
Lopez is the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Chair Emeritus in Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute, University of Notre Dame. In his 30 years at Notre Dame, he won a number of teaching awards as well as Notre Dame’s Media Legend award. Since 1992 Lopez has advised various international agencies and governments regarding these issues.
He has written or edited 11 books and more than 50 articles. From October 2010 through July 2011, he served on the United Nations Panel of Experts for monitoring and implementing United Nations sanctions on North Korea. Lopez went on to serve as the Vice President of the Academy for International Conflict Management and Peace building at the United States Institute of Peace, Washington, D.C., from September 2013 to July 2015. He returned to Notre Dame in the fall of 2015 and continues to be a contributor to national publications on the issue of economic sanctions and international peace building.
The College’s Walter K. Levy Lecture Series is dedicated to the memory and spirit of Walter K. Levy, 1952 graduate and former trustee of Washington & Jefferson College.
