Corey Young currently serves as the Director of the Center for Energy Policy and Management (CEPM) at W&J. Established in 2012, the CEPM is a grant-funded center of excellence dedicated to fostering the development of energy policy that promotes economic growth while minimizing environmental impacts. Since its establishment, the Center has grown to address not only the production, transmission, and consumption of energy but also the broader issues of resilience and sustainability at the community level. Today, the CEPM works with its affiliated faculty members and student research fellows to provide on-campus energy leadership in an effort to conserve energy, lower utility costs, and reduce carbon emissions; sponsor opportunities for the college community to learn about energy, technology, and design; and work directly with communities in southwestern Pennsylvania to address issues related to energy and the built environment.

Before coming to the CEPM, Corey served as a municipal planner in a suburb of Dallas, TX as well as the Director of Grants and Planning for a transit provider that served communities in north Texas and southern Oklahoma. As the Director, Corey led a team that established innovative funding mechanisms to support public transit services and won more than $3 million in competitive grants from the Texas Department of Transportation and Federal Transit Administration.

Today, Corey’s work focuses on design, development, and the built environment at the community level. Specifically, Corey is interested in the economic and fiscal impacts of energy production as well as the relationship between energy, the built environment, and public health. Over the past several years, Corey has developed and offered a host of new courses at W&J including Community Planning, Design, and Development; Urban Resilience; Urban Design Policy; Communities in Conflict: Fracking in the United States; Municipal Management and Non-Profit Leadership; and Community Analysis Techniques. These interdisciplinary courses have typically served as electives and special topics in the Environmental Studies, Public Policy, and Sociology programs.

In addition to his work at W&J, Corey currently serves on the leadership board for the southwest section of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association as well as on the Board of Directors for the Local Government Academy.
