WASHINGTON, PA (March 24, 2015) — The Olin Fine Art Gallery at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) will soon host Portals, an exhibition of large, geometric tarpaulin paintings by artist Robert Patrick.

The exhibition opens with a reception and artist talk at 6 p.m. on March 27 and will be shown until April 17.

“My paintings are portals to magic worlds, areas of energy composed of biomorphic symbols,” said Patrick. “I want the viewer to feel the gallery walls open to dream environments, a subconscious nature of the imagination.”

Patrick’s paintings are delineating topographies of time and space. Working with un-treated tarps and layered paint, Patrick draws imagery from a conflation of visible forms in nature and the invisible energies described by theoretical physics. Patrick believes that all forms, whether cosmic or atomic, share common vectors.

Since 2010, Patrick’s work has been in 40 exhibitions in cities around the world, including Minneapolis, Chicago, New York and at galleries in Switzerland.

Patrick received his MFA and BFA from the University of Minnesota, and currently lives in White Bear, Minn. with his wife and two sons.

Douglas McGlumphy, director of Olin Fine Art Gallery, said he is excited to share Patrick’s work with the students of W&J and with the public.

“The Olin Art Gallery is honored to bring contemporary artists to Washington & Jefferson College,” he said. “Our students and college community benefit from the direct interaction with working artists across a diverse range of materials and content.”

*All Olin Fine Art Gallery events and exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Gallery is located at 285 East Wheeling Street in Washington, Pa. It is open Monday through Friday from noon to 7 p.m. during exhibition dates. The Gallery is closed during college breaks.
