WASHINGTON, PA (Dec. 21, 2015) — Due to the exemplary volunteer efforts of its students, faculty and staff members, Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) earned a place on the President's 2014 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The President of the United States annually recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful, measurable outcomes in communities through service.

Honorees are chosen based on a number of factors, including the scope and innovation of service projects, the extent to which service-learning is embedded in the curriculum, the school’s commitment to long-term campus-community partnerships, and measurable community outcomes as a result of service.

Nationally and in Pennsylvania, W&J is a member of Pennsylvania Campus Compact and Campus Compact, the NASPA Lead Initiative, and is a partner of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. Locally, W&J is a member of CommUNITY in WashPA, a forum for the greater Washington community whose members organize events to promote a peaceful and unified Washington.

Additionally, W&J student organizations joined forces with community members and local organizations in 2015 for DubStep, a series of fundraising initiatives that raised more than $11,000 for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation.

During the 2014-15 academic year, W&J Fraternity and Sorority Life organizations alone collectively raised $20,412 in cash donations toward various projects and community groups. They also clocked more than 1,248 philanthropy hours spent fundraising for charitable causes, and 3,844 service hours spent in hands-on service to local causes and community organizations.

W&J student volunteers frequently assist local organizations, including Highland Ridge Community Development Corporation, Habitat for Humanity, Washington Humane Society, Washington City Mission and the Lemoyne Community Center, among others.

W&J was named to the President’s Honor Roll in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. The 2015 Honor Roll awardees will be announced in 2016.
