WASHINGTON, PA (April 26, 2019)—For the sixth year in a row, the Washington & Jefferson College Arboretum has been honored with the Tree Campus USA recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management.
W&J is one of 18 schools in Pennsylvania to receive this designation and one of 368 colleges nation-wide to obtain this recognition in 2019.
To celebrate the recognition, W&J Assistant Professor of Biology Jason Kilgore and members of the Arboretum Advisory Committee organized a tree planting event on Arbor Day to expand the Rocky Mountain themed tree bed outside the Admission House. The planting added white fir trees, yuccas, and switchgrass to the tree bed.
Washington & Jefferson College achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and a student service-learning project. W&J has been recognized every year it has applied for the honor.
