WASHINGTON, PA (September 11, 2013)—Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) will host a financial seminar titled, “How to Fund a Small or Start-up Business,” Sept. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Mt. Vernon Room of the George Washington Hotel on Main Street in Washington, Pa.
The Washington County Council on Economic Development and the University of Pittsburgh’s Small Business Development Center will also be giving presentations.
Topics to be covered will include alternative funding sources, from bank and Small Business Association loans to Small Business Innovative Research grants (SBIR) to microloan programs to crowdfunding. Attendees will have the opportunity to make contacts useful in seeking funding for a small or start-up business.
“We’ve packed a wealth of valuable information into this short, 2-hour seminar. As important as finding out what funding sources are available to them, small and start-up business owners also will learn what sources are NOT good candidates for them and therefore they can avoid pursuing low probability funding strategies,” said Jim Greenwood, a consultant working with W&J to explore the feasibility of establishing a business incubator in Washington.
The seminar will discuss:
• Funding as a major hurdle for most small and start-up businesses;
• Different companies in different stages of development and in different industries need to pick different sources and types of funding. This is definitely not a “one size fits all” situation;
• What major sources exist for everything from small retail or service businesses to high-tech start-ups;
• How to justify the amount of money needed and ability to repay a loan;
• Meeting valuable contacts from which you can learn more about specific funding sources;
• Finally, a proposed business incubator that would be a resource to small and start-up businesses in the Washington area.
