WASHINGTON, PA (Sept. 15, 2017)—Members of the Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) Class of 2021 went above and beyond from Sept. 11 to Sept. 17 with volunteer projects around the Washington area, demonstrating that together we really do thrive.

“The W&J Week of Service is the first event of this scale at W&J,” Director of Community Engagement Justin Dandoy said. “In previous years, we had organized W&J Day of Service for all new students as part of orientation. To better accommodate more students’ schedules and the needs of our community partners, and to increase our impact, we shifted this year to the W&J Week of Service, kicking off with September 11, the National Day of Service.”

Students spent their time with various groups in the Greater Washington Area, including the Brownson House, Anova Hospice, the Greater Washington County Food Bank, Smart Kids Care & Learning Center, the Washington Salvation Army, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Highland Ridge Community Development Corporation, and Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

“We understand that when joining a college community, that place becomes your home for the next four years. Our College is connected with our local community, and so we want to take this opportunity to introduce our new students to their new home,” Dandoy said. “It’s part of W&J’s mission statement to support students who contribute substantially to the world in which they live, and we feel that introducing them to service at such an early point in their College career can help to do so.”
