WASHINGTON, PA (Aug. 25, 2017)—Rhyan Smith, a graduate student at West Virginia University (WVU) studying statistics, took advantage of the relationship between the university and Washington & Jefferson College (W&J), spending the summer working with W&J’s Director of Assessment and Institutional Research, accreditation liaison officer and co-chair of the Middle States Steering Committee Lindsey Guinn. Smith assisted Guinn in gathering and organizing information as part of the College’s accreditation process through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
Smith heard about the opening from a peer who had completed the internship last year. Guinn, a Morgantown, W.Va., native and current resident and wife of a WVU alumnus, established an annual internship for WVU students through her relationship with the chair of the statistics department. The goal of the internship is to give graduate students practical experience to use statistical skills.
“Working at W&J is a unique experience because it gives an intern real hands on experience working on assessment and accreditation, which many higher education professionals do not have experience with,” Guinn said.
